Opening of the invigorating article “Why Music Education?” 2007” with so many atrocities dividing the world, music is a great way to bring people together (9). Diagnosed with a severe case of autism and blindness at birth, Derek Paravacini is considered a musical savant. He has the extraordinary ability to play a piece of music right after hearing it. Derek has been passionate about the piano since the age of two and has been performing around the world since the age of nine. Having studied various musical genres, at age 32 he was able to transform an elegant classical piece into an upbeat jazz piece. His virtuosity knows no bounds as he continues to absorb all knowledge related to music. School boards that cut music programs do not understand the monumental impacts that music has on an individual. All over the world, Durant writes, songs are also made to inspire and even move a person emotionally (2). Energy will surge through an exhausted football team, motivated simply by a fight song performed by the group. Although music can energize a team, some songs offer hushed or soothing tunes to put a person to sleep (Sherman 6). That same song at the football game that inspires the team to win another touchdown has the power to lift the crowd's hopes. Composer Gilbert Galindo reveals that certain musical genres affect a person's mood (2). Music is used for expression and even communication (O'Neil 1). A specific song can feel like memories to a person (Durant 1). A single song can represent a lost love, a budding relationship, a devastating heartbreak, a memory of where the song was first heard, and even a connection to their religion.
