  • Essay / The History of the Gallaudet School for the Deaf

The Gallaudet School for the Deaf is a university in Washington, DC. The school was initially intended for the deaf and blind. Mason Cogswell had a daughter, Alice, who was deaf. Like any father, he worried about her education because she couldn't learn like normal children. Cogswell discovered that in England, Thomas Braidwood had opened a school for the deaf, so he sent the most reliable person he knew to investigate the school. He convinced his neighbor and member of his intellectual circle, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, to go check it out in England. Thomas Gallaudet was a recognized genius. He was a reverend who founded Yale University at age fourteen. Three years later, at seventeen, he graduated first in his class. Gallaudet was pleased with his findings and returned with a companion and the two founded the first school for the deaf, the American School for the Deaf. Alice was the first student and the school still trains today. Gallaudet University was founded in 1864 when Amos Kendall donated two acres in Washington, D.C. for deaf and blind students seeking assistance. He became involved in the children's lives and convinced the government to leave them under his guardianship. He received government assistance and founded the Columbia Institute for the Instruction for the Deaf and Dumb. Kendall appointed Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet's son, Edward Miner Gallaudet, as superintendent. In the 20th century, the university moved more toward technical fields of study, but Percival Hall, the school's second president, changed the curriculum again to orient it toward a more liberal field. In 1954, an act of Congress transformed the Columbia Institute for Deaf Education into Gallaudet University. In 1970, Gallaudet was middle of paper...... means of escaping his punishment, including insanity, which was not professionally proven, and that someone with black gloves had signed for him to do it. what he did. Which also turned out to be false. Mesa was charged with two counts of murder, one while armed, as well as a few counts of theft and burglary. He was imprisoned for the rest of his life without parole. Even though the school has gone through difficult times, Gallaudet University remains strong. Deaf people dream of going to school and are honored to be able to benefit from a good education even if they have a disability. Many students are getting good jobs and changing the deaf community. They inspire young deaf people and prove to the world that even if they are not normal people, they can still make a difference. Normal is overrated anyway.
