  • Essay / Zoos: The Importance of Animal Conservation - 845

An Old World monkey, the wolf monkey has been classified as "one of the most colorful, graceful and lively monkeys in Africa" ( San Diego Zoo, Mammals: Guenon ). This monkey is native to Africa and has many different names. More commonly known as the wolf monkey, this species of monkey has also been called the Mona wolf monkey and by its scientific name Cercopithecus wolfi. The Wolf Guenon is typically a medium-sized monkey. The mammal can measure 60 inches from head to tail and weigh an average of 6 to 9 pounds (Atlanta Zoo, Wolf's Guenon). Usually males are larger than females and can weigh up to twice as much. Although generally smaller in size, the female wolf monkey must be physically strong, especially to reproduce. On average, females carry their young for up to 5 or 6 months. However, males and females don't just vary in size. Depending on the species of wolf guenon, females tend to reach maturity between 3 and 6 years of age, while males reach maturity between 4 and 7 years of age (San Diego Zoo, Mammals: Guenon). The wolf monkey is divided into three different subspecies. , each varying in size, color and personality (The Primata, Wolf's Monkey (Cercopithecus wolfi)). These subspecies are generally called C. wolfi wolfi, C. wolfi pyrogaster and C. wolfi elegans. The wolf monkey is generally grayish in color with a brown colored back, black arms and slightly red legs. The whiskers are yellow with black spots and the ear tufts are white and yellow. However, the coloring differs for each subspecies and individual, making this animal a truly distinct and magnificent creature (The Primata, Wolf Monkey (Cercopithecus wolfi)). Similar to other Old World or African monkeys, the wolf monkey has extra skin...... middle of paper ......zoos are no longer about making money but rather to save animals like the wolf monkey which are endangered. The change in the purpose of zoos is evident in the change in animal enclosures. In America's first zoo, animals were crowded behind iron bars with other animals that would not otherwise be near each other. Nowadays, zoos in the United States do their best to mimic each animal's natural habitat to ensure the comfort and conservation of the animal (Kidcyber, Zoos). Hopefully, zoos will continue to emphasize the importance of animal conservation as the years go by. It would be devastating for humanity and the environment if a species, like the wolf monkey, were to become extinct. The San Diego Zoo has a global wildlife conservation program to promote the conservation of all endangered species, including the wolf guenon (San Diego Zoo, Mammals: Guenons).
