Essay / The Progress of John Bunyan's Pilgrimage - 1125
Many people wonder what it would be like to leave the dangerous city where they live and travel to an abundant paradise. This scenario is described in John Bunyan's allegorical book, Pilgrim's Progress. This fascinating story describes the life of Christian, a married man living in the City of Destruction, who longs to travel to the Heavenly City. While Christian struggles to stay on track, albeit on a more difficult path, I struggle to focus in school and not pay attention to distracting ideas. I also struggle to become strong enough in dancing to become a professional dancer, just as Christian must climb the Hill of Difficulties to get to the Magnificent Palace. In order for Christian to arrive at the Heavenly City without losing his life, he must be patient. In the same way, I must be patient to achieve my life goal. Just as Christian struggled to overcome the obstacles in his life, I must become stronger at dancing, focusing in school, and being patient in order to achieve my life goal of becoming a faithful and patient person of God. Christian meets many people who try and lead him down a different path, including Worldly Wiseman. Worldly Wiseman encourages Christian to shed his burden and take the short and easy path to his destiny, instead of the long and difficult path that Christian is currently taking. Christian notes that even though the short route is described as "better" by Wiseman, Christian knows that he must stay on his own route because he finds relief in it: "I don't care what I encounter on the way, as long as that I can. find also deliverance from my burden” (Bunyan 16). Worldly Wiseman focuses his life on removing all burdens and bringing comfort to the world. Christian, for his part, keeps his burden, and pushes the...... middle of paper ......e, I had difficulty becoming stronger to ride on pointe, but in the end, my reward was was actually able to dance on the tips of my toes without hurting myself. Plus, I had to concentrate a lot in school and not be able to have fun with my friends, but my grades stayed high and that made school easier. At the time, I didn't feel very wise as Mr. Worldly Wiseman, but I quickly learned that it also taught me to be patient. Through all my experiences in my own life, I learned to be more patient with myself and realized how much easier it would be to achieve my life goal through new experiences. Even though I have not yet achieved my life goal, I am still learning through my experiences, just as Christian learned from his experiences going to the Heavenly City.
