Essay / Scientific Research: Projectile Motion and Arcs - 569
There are many concepts in shooting, including arc, backspin, projectile motion, and trajectory. For my science project, I wanted to know if shooting from different starting points made a person more likely to make a successful shot. I think the most crucial element of a shot is the arc. It is important for a person to have an average arch. If their arc is too flat or too high, it will be very difficult for them to score. Without a good arc, players wouldn't score as much. One of the most important, and sometimes most overlooked, shooting techniques is backspin. While it may not be the most important, the main purpose of backspin is to soften your shot by giving it a better chance of going through the basket, instead of slamming off the rim. The purpose of backspin on a ball is not to provide air resistance, but rather to help it bounce through the net after contact with the rim. After bouncing off the board, the ball will change direction, making it more likely to go in. You want to have your feet square to the basket so that backspin doesn't work against you. The faster you swing...
