Essay / The Strong and Courageous Hero - 1004
A brave hero often risks his life to save someone else. In Zeitoun, Dave Eggers tells the story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun, the Syrian-American worker who owns a contracting company in New Orleans. Zeitoun and his wife Kathy ran the business together. They have three children named Nademah, Safiyah and Aisha. Kathy has one child from her first marriage. Zeitoun is very closed with his family and he takes his family like no other. When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, countless numbers of people were affected. Mayor Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation for the first time. Kathy moved with the children to her sister's house in Baton Rouge. Zeitoun refused to leave with his family because he did not want to lose his properties, but at the same time his clients trusted him and gave him their house keys to check the condition of their house, which caused his separation from his family. This shows that Zeitoun is a responsible, powerful, trustworthy and selfless person. During the hurricane, Zeitoun used a canoe to rescue people. Due to the lack of relief, many people did not receive enough support at that time. Zeitoun had the courage to sacrifice his family, his safety and his selfish needs to save the people. Zeitoun could bravely face all the frustration and live in all conditions because he had experienced a lot. He was born in Jableh, a fishing town on the Syrian coast. He started fishing when he was just thirteen years old. His father died when he was twelve. He and his brother Ahmad grew up in a poor family. After Zeitoun moved to New Orleans and started his own business, he eventually improved his standard of living. Additionally, Kathy regularly helped run the business. One day, Zeitoun and his workers...... middle of paper... there. A hero should never be afraid. Apparently, Zeitoun had put himself in the worst situation due to his time in a hurricane. When his family needed him most, he helped people in the city. He brought water and food to people as well as animals. He sacrifices his selfish needs instead of saving these supplies for himself. No matter how his wife Kathy tried to convince him to evacuate, Zeitoun just didn't want to leave people behind because hundreds of thousands of people really needed help. He understood the situation and reacted. The caring and sharing really meant a lot to people at that time. By staying in the hurricane, Zeitoun demonstrated how much he cared for the people there. His actions and character traits must be considerable, appreciable and respectful.
