  • Essay / The Power of Love: Lancelot by Chrétien de Troyes

Have you ever wondered how love can bring you happiness and pain and make you sane and crazy at the same time. How this emotion can change you and make you accept things you are not used to. How this emotion can overwhelm you in many ways you didn't know existed. In Lancelot by Chrétien de Troyes, the power of love is a dominant driving force that can dominate a person's mind, body and soul and he who has the courage to love sometimes suffers serious consequences. . Consequences that flow from the power of love, which harm and cause difficulty to the one who is determined to seek love. This is described by Lancelot, "the knight of carts", who underlies Queen Guinevere's love of King Arthur. His love begins when Queen Guinevere is captured by Méléagant and the knights are challenged to save her. The first indication of his love for Guinevere is when he asks to leave because she would no longer be there, and he wishes that King Arthur would entrust her to him so that he would stay. On foot and without his spear, Lancelot set off in search of a cart designed for criminals in order to continue his quest for Guinevere. As noted on p. 17, "he would regret this moment of hesitation and be accused and shamed", but he puts his pride aside in order to continue. Even if his honor is at stake, no reason can change his love for Guinevere. Furthermore, page 19 states, “but the love that reigned in his heart impelled him and commanded him to get into the cart immediately. Love wanted it, and he launched himself, shame did not matter to him since love governs his action. This shows that his love for Guinevere is real, and nothing would stop him from reaching her even if it shames him and makes him look bad. For the love he has for Guinevere; Lancelot was ...... middle of paper ......lf continuing to live. She illustrates in her own way the power of love. In lines 4285-4292, it shows Lancelot's attempt to end his life because of the news of his love's disappearance. His love for Guinevere is so strong that he does not think of continuing his life in pain and agony, because he knows that he would be able to bear the thought of living when his love herself is gone. Both Lancelot and Guinevere have different intentions in showing their love for each other. Love is one of the most spoken and written words of all time, one of the most unexplained mysteries of human feelings. Therefore, the power of love is mind-boggling, and while it brings both happiness and joy, it can bring pain and sorrow and should never be underestimated. Works Cited Kibler, William W.
