Julius Caesar was a general and politician of the late Roman Republic. He greatly influenced the size of the Roman Empire before seizing power and becoming dictator of Rome, paving the way for the imperial system. (Julius Caesar 100 BC-44 BC, April 29, 2014) Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus Augustus was born on July 12 or 13, 100 BC into the prestigious Julius clan. He and his family were closely linked to the Marion faction in Roman politics. Caesar began to advance within the Roman political system. He became quaestor of succession in 69 BC, aedile in 65 BC and praetor in 62 BC. From 61 to 60 BC he was governor of the Roman province of Spain. Later, in Rome, in 60 BC, Caesar made a pact with Pompey and Crassus, which helped him get elected consul for 59 BC. Shortly afterwards, the following year, he was appointed governor of Roman Gaul, where he remained for eight years. During these eight successful years he added all of modern France and Belgium to the Roman Empire. In doing so, he protected Rome from the possibility of Gallic invasions. (Julius Caesar 100 BC-44 BC, April 30, 2014) Julius married Cornelia when he was eighteen and she was thirteen. Together they had a child named Julia. This did not last long as Cornelia died in childbirth in 67 BC. Soon after, Caesar married Pomeia, a cousin of Pompey. This marriage ended in divorce due to a scandal during the rites of Bona Dea. Since Caesar was then Pontifax Maximus, his mother and Pompeia conducted the rites at their home. To this day, no one really knows what the real rites were.
