These two criteria are at the heart of changing many habit loops and play a fundamental role in changing a habit. First, to stop drinking, alcoholics must believe that it is possible for them to do so. A strong belief can make it easy for anyone to get what they want. As Joyce Meyer writes, “Our thoughts fuel our actions.” How can change happen if their minds and words are filled with uncertainty and unbelief? This is because their thinking has diverted action towards achieving their goals. Then, the support of those around them is also crucial for alcoholics to stop drinking. A favorable environment can prolong the change of habit, or even make it permanent. When alcoholics receive support from the people they love, it will be easier for them to develop resilience. They will do their best not to disappoint their loved ones. Support comes not only from family or friends, but also from any support group of alcoholics who want to end their addiction.
