  • Essay / The first gay film: Transamerica directed by Duncan...

The first gay film I watched was “Transamerica” directed by Duncan Tucker. While reading her review, I was impressed and fascinated by a phrase “Bree is the one many will identify with in the need to become the person you really should be” (Irapoport, 2005). After this movie, I started looking for other gay movies and continued to watch gay movies until today. I'm the type of person who loves movies; however, this does not apply to all genders. Interestingly, even though I'm a girl who's always interested in boys, my favorite genre of movies is gay movies. I usually decide whether or not to watch a movie by reading its review, and I have yet to be disappointed. This is consistent with Scott and Yalch's (1980) assertion that a favorable review would heighten a consumer's expectations, if their prior experience indicated that the enjoyment they felt from watching films is the same as what they predicted from a review. I think the fundamental reason why I chose “Transamerica” is precisely because its review was very interesting. However, aside from this particular reason, there are other reasons that influence my decision to continue watching gay films: a sense of identity and relief from tension resulting from internal conflicts.
