  • Essay / The Station Nightclub Investigation - 751

SUMMARY OF THE INCIDENTOn the night of February 20, 2003, the 80s rock and roll band Great White was performing a concert at The Station, a nightclub located in West Warwick, Rhode Island. From the first moments of their show, their manager who was operating the pyrotechnics set off a burst of fireworks. This burst of pyrotechnics ignited the acoustic foam of the nightclub and started a fire which engulfed the nightclub in less than 6 minutes. The nightclub had a building permit capacity for 200 people. At the time of the fire, the club had more than double the allowed limit, with more than 440 people inside to watch the show. Minutes after flames engulfed the nightclub, smoke prevented escape, causing a panic when concert-goers began running toward the main exit, even though the nightclub had 3 other exits , everyone was focused on the main exit. The fact that many people were focused on a single exit led to a biomass that created a traffic jam and many victims died in or near the main corridor or were crushed as everyone tried to escape. In total, 100 people died and 230 were injured. Injuries were varied but included smoke inhalation, burns and trampling injuries. Station Nightclub was built in 1946 and used as a restaurant, tavern, and various other nightclubs over the years until a fire in 1972. It was repaired in 1985 and changed hands until 1991, when which the current owners of the Station have taken over. The Station nightclub is a wooden frame structure. There were windows located on the north and east side of the building. There are small windows in the bathrooms and office located on the south wall. The building has four exits; the main entrance, one exit near the stage, one near the bar and the fourth exit is located in the middle of the paper ...... rces to facilitate the effectiveness of emergency responses.RELATED STUDIES ON RECOMMENDATIONSChapter 7 Means of exit; I think Chapter 7 best matches recommendation number 5. In Chapter 7, the means of egress, gross floor area, net floor area, and calculations used to determine the maximum occupant load for a room or an area and the necessary exits are discussed. Chapter 8 Interior finishing requirements; I felt more connected to Recommendation 3. Chapter 8 teaches which building elements are regulated, the testing methods used to classify interior elements, and the need to regulate interior finishes based on previous fires.
