The most compelling quote from the epic poem Beowulf is found on page 48, lines 264-269. Beowulf said: "My lord Higlac would perhaps think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were too afraid, if I hid behind a broad shield of lime: my hands alone would fight for me, would fight for life against the monster. ยป This is when Beowulf shows that he does not want Higlac's respect for him to diminish or lessen. He would rather fight hand to hand than let anyone, especially the lord, think less of him or lose all respect. For Beowulf, it seems that respect not only from highly respected people, but also from ordinary people, means a lot to him. He has earned the respect he has and doing something to make him seem weaker or inferior is not an option for him. Although Beowulf uses armor and weapons to fight other monsters, this does not diminish anyone's thoughts of him. This is because Grendel's mother and the dragon are stronger and harder fights to face and people don't want to see him fail. Just being able to defeat these monsters and keep the Dane safe earns their respect. Although Beowulf may not have known it, he was extremely respected, even in death. So much so that they buried him with the money, jewelry, and treasures that had been taken away once he killed the dragon. It is clear that Beowulf was respected throughout
