Not only that, but these positions tend to pay women less. It was found that “female doctors earned on average about 36 percent less than male doctors in 2008 [and] female lawyers…earn about 80 percent of the salaries of male lawyers” (Shaw 410). This difference between the earnings of men and women is called the gender wage gap. The gender pay gap affects all women of all ages, education levels and backgrounds. It was reported that “in 2013, among full-time, year-round workers, women received 78 percent of what men received” (Aauw). The gender wage gap is very different between minority women and the average white worker. "Asian American women's wages have the smallest gender wage gap, at 90 percent of that of white men. Hispanic women's wages have the largest gap, at 54 percent of that white men" (Aauw). We know that the wage gap widens as a woman ages. "Women typically earn about 90 percent of what men earn until they reach age 35. After that, women's median earnings are typically 75 to 80 percent of what men earn."
