Essay / Theme of Heroism in the Plague by Albert Camus - 793
The interesting concept of the absurd hero is classically presented by author Albert Camus in several of his novels, including The Plague. An absurd hero is a person who does what they must do, whether or not they can control the situation. For example, Dr. Rieux, doctor in the town plagued by the plague, continues his work daily and as diligently as ever, instead of giving in to the worry and fear his town feels because of this epidemic. widespread. Camus uses this conception of the absurd hero to develop the four main characters, Tarrou, Rambert, Grand, but especially Doctor Bernard Rieux. Rieux is an absolutely absurd hero because he does what he has to do. He still works as a doctor instead of hiding in fear, hoping not to catch the plague like many other citizens. Of course, he doesn't want to get sick, but he knows that shouldn't stop him from completely ignoring his duties. Unlike many of his fellow citizens who were sheltering at home, he is aware of his responsibility and has lived up to his specific duty. Everyone's belief was that the entire town was doomed to die, which was influenced by the priest's sermon, claiming it was punishment for the sins of the residents, but Dr. Rieux ignored him and stayed to fight. "There is no question of heroism in all this. It is a question of modesty. It is an idea that may make some people smile, but the only way to fight a scourge is modesty." (Camus, The Plague). He doesn't give up or show weakness. Dr. Rieux has a personality very similar to the character of Sisyphus in The Myth of Sisyphus. Sisyphus is condemned to roll a boulder to the top of the mountain, then watch it roll back down, for eternity. "Dude... middle of paper... against the plague, show him who's boss." This is good because it shows his perseverance and how good his moral character is. Dr. Rieux's absurd personality is one of the main contributors, as is his role as the absurd hero in The Plague. The concept of the absurd hero clearly shows the development of the main character, Dr. Bernard Rieux. Thanks to his slim chances of changing the present, his maintenance of existentialist integrity and his absurd personality, the perfect absurd hero is born. Dr. Rieux is a true fighter for what he believes is the best for all, his fellow citizens. He is neither selfish nor rude. He is neither complicit nor skeptical. He knows exactly what the future holds, more deaths from the plague, but that doesn't stop him from realizing his goal in life, helping the sick. He's an unlikely hero, but he certainly proves worthy of the title "hero ยป..
