There are two theories of aging. Disengagement theory occurs when older adults unfortunately begin to give up on their activities or social lives. They withdraw from society. This is when you disengage from any means of contact or interaction. The disengagement theory can be explained by the deterioration of physical functions. There are three phases in disengagement theory. This is a shrinking of living space when you don't work or have contact with friends and family. You don't meet new people. You decide not to take up any hobbies or activities. The second phase is increased individuality. This is when you become independent and what others do no longer matters to you. The third phase is acceptance. You start to accept things as they are. You accept that this is the final stage of life and don't try to fight it. Cumming and Henry are two people who developed this theory which suggests possible outcomes for those who disengage from interests and society.
