Essay / Serving in the military should continue to be voluntary...
Since the start of the first war involving America, there have been countless discussions about who should fight for our country. We talk about age, gender and whether the service should be voluntary or not. In America, service is voluntary, while in other countries it is not. Service should remain voluntary in America, because otherwise it would go against freedom and cause new problems in our country. Additionally, if young people took two years of their lives to serve, they would not gain the experience needed to work in fields that require more labor. In America, we live by the idea of freedom. When we think of freedom, America comes to mind. The stars and stripes. The Declaration of Independence. The fathers found. We have created the ultimate “land of the free,” our national anthem even embodies this idea. Freedom means having your own voice and being able to do what makes you happy. Forcing young men and women to dedicate two years of their lives to serving in our military does not even come close to following the idea of a free country. We have the right to choose the field we want to work in, and we should have the freedom to do so. Forcing someone to do anything will, even if it is not initially the case, eventually, for lack of better words, arouse feelings of hatred. Additionally, trying to control someone will almost always result in rebellions. If we pick up our history books, world or American, we see examples of this everywhere. Women revolting in the 1920s against conservative methods, slaves freeing themselves, the Philippines revolting against the Spanish, the list goes on and on with protests, uprisings, etc. Forcing our young people to serve will only push citizens to do everything to avoid it. Many families with young children...... middle of paper...... scarred and possibly physically, too. Trying to take off from where you left off may not be possible. Consider a young boy who wants to become a firefighter but serves two years in advance. Imagine that during the fights, he loses his legs. His dream of becoming a firefighter will never come true, not because of a choice, but because he was forced to put himself in danger. The way conscription is described is that it requires every young man or woman to serve in the military for two years. . In this description, “requires” is just a euphemism for “force.” A requirement simply means that it is not optional, which is exactly what forcing includes. Demanding that a young person change their life is immoral and should not be added to our society. Even if our country were not founded on freedom, conscription would still be an injustice..
