    Gilman, in her autobiography, encourages women to make something of themselves by stating that "women's work is not confined to the home" (Gilman). My goal used to be to become a housewife, but after studying and re-reading "The Yellow Wallpaper", I don't want to put my destiny in the hands of a man, when I have both hands right next to me of me. I want to pursue a career and continue even when I find the right man in my life. I want to think for myself and not base my own opinions on those of the people and society around me. Elizabeth Keyser, literary critic of “The Yellow Wallpaper” states in an article: “it offers a model for reversing gender roles and an action plan for encouraging a feminist return to patriarchy” (Weinbaum). Gilman, through her story, encourages women to continue to question the society we live in, until we feel equal. The narrator does this with her husband, because she continues to write even though she is forbidden to do so, and she tears off the wallpaper even though her husband says there is nothing wrong with it.
