  • Essay / Fulton Sheen - 897

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was born in El Paso, Illinois. He was the eldest of his parents' four sons. During his childhood, Fulton contracted tuberculosis. His family later moved to Peoria, Illinois, where Sheen played his first role in the Church; he was an altar boy at Sainte-Marie Cathedral. After graduating from high school in 1913, Sheen attended school at St. Viator College in Bourbonnais, Illinois, where he attended St. Paul's Seminary in Minnesota before being ordained. He was ordained on September 20, 1919. He continued his studies at the Catholic University of America, located in Washington DC. At the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, Sheen received his doctorate in philosophy. During his stay, he became the only American to win the Cardinal Mercier Prize for best philosophical treatise. He did so well on his exam that during dinner, Sheen had buckets full of champagne. In 1924, Sheen wanted to continue his studies and so pursued his doctorate in sacred theology at the Pontificium Collegium Internationale Angelicum. It later became known as the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum. Early in his priestly life, Sheen was assistant pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Soho Square, London, for a year. While assistant he taught theology at St. Edmund's College, Ware. Here he met Ronald Knox. Ronald Knox, who was a good friend of Sheen, wanted him to teach philosophy at Oxford, alongside Columbia. Sheen ended up teaching philosophy at Catholic University. He taught there from 1926 to 1950. He began his radio ministry speaking at St. Paul's Church in Manhattan. When the bishops of the United States wanted a national program, they chose it to...... middle of paper...... I think Archbishop Fulton Sheen should become a saint because he played a major role in the spread of Catholicism and anti-communism. Some official miracles are attributed to him, but others are still under investigation. He played a major role in the dissemination of Catholicism through his missions, but also in his radio and television broadcasts. He also had the gift of prophecy and was able to see what would happen in the world. It almost seemed like he had a direct connection to God, and everything he said seemed like God was saying it through him. Without him, all these little children would not be alive today if he had not prayed for them. Archbishop Sheen seemed to touch the lives of many people during his life, but also after his death. I can say he had a profound influence on Father Apostali because of the way he spoke about him..
