Essay / Savages At Hand - 1111
William Golding said that “Lord of the Flies is an attempt to trace the faults of society back to the faults of human nature.” Golding uses dynamic symbols in Lord of the Flies to prove that the problems in today's society are due to flaws in human nature. Ralph symbolizes how looks and beauty win the hearts of the community, while Piggy symbolizes intelligence and wisdom. Jack, the tyrannical leader who uses fear to dominate and control society, while Simon uses peace and love to show his gratitude to the community. Golding manipulates his main characters to prove that humans are full of flaws. Ralph is Golding's way of representing our natural human flaw of how we choose to follow attractive and powerful leaders. Golding makes Ralph the leader of the boys' community, when he says, "Shut up...It seems to me we should have a leader to decide things." » (22). Roger, a “little one”, gives at the beginning of the book the idea of organizing a vote, which Ralph wins hands down. Golding says: “None of the boys could have found any good reason for this; the intelligence that had been demonstrated could be attributed to Piggy, while the most obvious leader was Jack. (22). The author gives the reader a beautiful description of Ralph: “But there was a calmness about Ralph as he sat that distinguished him: there was his height and attractive appearance; and most obscurely; but, more powerful still, there was the conch. »(22). Ralph's appearance shows that he dominates the choir. Through Ralph, Golding shows us that we like to have strong and beautiful leaders. During the news, Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former governor of California, gained media attention because of his divorce. The media and public love to look at beautiful people... middle of paper ... Jack Hunters symbolize Hitler's army. In Lord of the Flies, Jack replicates Hitler's actions. Jack becomes a power-hungry savage who preys on the weakness of others. Golding lets physical power dominate knowledge and wisdom when Jack kills Piggy. Physical power may be something to fear, but building strength in numbers can overcome fear and intimidation. It is obvious that Golding used symbols to show the flaws in our human nature. Golding points out that we like to follow the beautiful, the rich and the famous. He also emphasizes that wisdom and knowledge are of no importance when choosing a leader. Simon helps show us that evil exists in every person, just like Jesus. Jack shows how without organized control, things become physical and savagery takes over. Without organized control, without wisdom and without knowledge, civilization cannot exist.
