  • Essay / Educate a woman, educate a generation - 859

“You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you are educating a generation. (Young). This quote illustrates the importance of women in today's society and the crucial role they play in inspiring the next generation of young women. Feminism is a social perspective dedicated to equality and equal rights between both sexes, men and women. This social perspective has been and still is practiced by millions of feminists around the world who fight for equal rights. The feminist movement has gone through three waves over the last century, changing the face of the human race as we know it. It has changed social norms and disrupted typical norms and stereotypes of gender inequality embedded in daily practices. In Canada, we still need feminism because women are considered less important than men in society, our culture is dominated by men, which leads to neglect of the major contributions of women to society and, finally , women are poorly represented in the media, let alone in broader culture. Theories on gender inequality identify that women's place in society is not only different but also unequal compared to men. For centuries, men have had more rights and privileges than women. The U.S. Census recently updated its statistics showing that women earn 77 percent of what men earn and for the same amount of work. This statistic was updated last month, February 2014. This is just one major example of how women are treated less equal than men, as women can work as hard or harder than men, for the same work, while receiving about three-quarters of men's wages. Women also often face what's known as a "glass ceiling" when it comes to promotions. This is evident when you look at the lack of women in middle of paper... example of how the media abuses the female body which is supposed to be the epitome of beauty but is instead objectified. It is rare to see women described as brilliant, intelligent and inspiring in the media. Popular male singers who frequently appear on television, such as Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake, and Usher, have all released songs that talk about women in a sexual context. Popular musicians like these have millions of fans. That’s millions of people listening to music that objectifies women. This is why feminism is absolutely necessary. As millions of people are shaped by the media, feminists must fight back even harder and speak out louder. Canada needs feminism because there is still so much work to be done for women's rights and equality. Feminism can shape humanity as we know it and fight for women's equality.
