    Prior to the 1960s, children with special needs did not receive an education equal to that of children without disabilities. Some children with special needs were lucky enough to go to public schools, but if they did, they did not receive enough care. There were schools designed for these children, but they were far from effective in teaching children. In the 1970s, people took a stand against the poor education of children with disabilities. These advocates, including many parents, have fought for special funding to provide children with special needs with appropriate education and better learning environments. Today, most children with special needs are openly welcome in public schools. This has recently been the subject of debate as to whether it was a wise choice in allowing students with special needs to interact and learn with mainstream students. Children with special needs should not be schooled separately because being with mainstream students helps disabled children learn from them and helps mainstream children learn to interact with different people.
