At the head of the new musical wave in the 1960s was the untouchable Jimi Hendrix, who brought an original sound and performed things unheard of in his time; electric guitars and distortion pedals were his working tools and people were crazy about them. He was born in Seattle, Washington on November 27, 1942. His mother was 17 years old when she gave birth to Jimmy. When Jimmy was young, he would play around the house and pretend to play guitar on various guitar-shaped objects around the house. His first guitar was purchased by his father, Al Hendrix, a Supro Ozark 1560S for five dollars. After a few more children, his father left the family and his mother died a few years later. During the first years of his musical career, he had to work odd jobs to succeed since he had dropped out of high school. He did, however, play with two bands at the time, The Rocking Kings and the Tomcats. In 1961, Jimmy had enlisted in the army as a paratrooper, and somehow during that time he had made room for a small band, The King Casuals. He was released in 1962 due to injury.
