  • Essay / Interpretations through the allegory of Boccaccio, The...

The simplified scenario of the Decameron tells the story of ten rich people, seven women and three men who abort from their homes in the city in order to avoid mysterious death by changing location to campaign. For ten days, Boccaccio discusses their daily activities, through his narrative writing technique, each character tells a story each day. As Boccaccio states in the introduction: “…most have passed away from this life without anyone present to witness it; very few left amid the pious lamentations and beloved tears of their loved ones, far from it, most took to the habit of laughing and celebrating while their loved ones died (Boccaccio 1). In times of emergency, the loyalties of some are broken and people adapt to a selfish attitude of fending for themselves. The actions of the characters correspond to the passage from Boccaccio mentioned above because the ten characters also leave everything behind them, including their loved ones, to reside in the countryside and spend their last days on earth having fun. Arguably, the characters act immorally; something that goes against the typical view of the Catholic religion, but in times of crisis circumstances can change. Another unique element that stands out from the Decameron is the equality between men and women.,
