The man has always told stories about his attempt to escape death, but he surely faces an untimely fate, and this story does not is no different. A major symbol of this is a very large pendulum clock which is located in the dark room at the end of the corridor. Like most large pendulum clocks, this one would produce a loud sound every hour. In fact, the sound of this clock was so loud that during the ball, every time it chimed, the party would stop and the music would stop until the reverberation of the clock's chime stopped . This clock is a very clear symbol of death, as Poe intended. With its constant chime every hour, reminding guests that as time passes, death draws closer and closer. As the night passes, the clock periodically stops the party until the uninvited guest arrives, causing Prospero to stop everything with a simple wave of his hand. It was midnight when the symbolic guest of the Red Death arrived, as Poe specifies; “But now there were twelve strokes to ring at the clock bell; and perhaps thus more thought crept, with more time, into the meditations of the thoughtful among those who reveled.
