Essay / The Gospel of Thomas - 1538
Discovered in the 20th century, the Gospel of Thomas was founded by peasants looking for fertilizer near the village of Nag Hammadi, Egypt. Peasants discovered a container containing thirteen leather-bound manuscripts that were buried in the 14th century. The container contained fifty-two treatises representing “heretical” writings of Gnostic Christians. Dating from 200 AD, not much was known about the Gospel of Thomas, other than that there were only three small fragments of Oxyrynchus. The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of literary works that contains 114 "opaque sayings" of Jesus that were collected and written by Saint Didymus Jude Thomas, but no one knows if Saint Didymus Jude Thomas wrote these words with certainty, c is the case. I just said yes. Saint Didymus Jude Thomas was said to be the twin brother of Jesus, assumed by some early Christians. Thomas is actually Hebrew for twin, and Didymus is also Greek for twin. According to the twelfth, the disciples said to Jesus: “We know that you are going to leave us. Who will be our leader? Jesus said to them: “Wherever you are, you will come to James the righteous, for whom heaven and earth were created” (Gospel of Thomas: saying 12). As I was reading the Gospel of Thomas and reading Twelve, I believe Jesus is stating that his brother James is the man to go to, the leader, when they need to go. I also believe that saying twelve is evidence that in the second century, someone who admired James was helped to write the Gospel of Thomas. Additionally, I think the author of the Gospel of Thomas most likely had access to the Gospel of John. This is because the author refers to Jesus as a light. Only the Gospel of John... middle of paper ...... it is impossible to answer how Christianity would be different if the Gospel of Thomas was in the New Testament because no one could say about the details. However, it would be safe to say that Christianity as we know it would not exist. The Bible now contains opposing teachings on salvation. This kind of contradiction would certainly lead to confusion and distrust regarding the veracity of the gospel accounts. The canonical Gospels date back to the early Church via the writings of the Ante-Nicene Church fathers. The Gnostic Gospels cannot be traced back to any writer linked in any way to Jesus. Additionally, all Old Testament and New Testament texts were never questioned among believers, while Gnostic texts were considered texts simply using the name "Jesus" to teach different "truths". »..”
