Essay / Should we legalize all handguns? - 2374
Should handguns be legalized? As we all know, guns as a whole have been a controversial issue for people from all walks of life. One side believes that guns should be legalized and the other is that guns should be completely illegal. When a person finds themselves in a dangerous situation, they should have the right to defend themselves. However, if someone is against guns, how can they defend themselves? For this reason, I am a strong proponent of firearms when it comes to being in a dangerous situation. What some people don't realize are the reasons why people need a gun. Some say guns kill and their misuse is growing at an alarming rate. In my opinion, people kill people and guns are not the only weapon of choice. I think guns should be legalized because it is our country's second amendment, individuals who live in disadvantaged neighborhoods need them, people placed in dangerous situations also need them, guns also provide a feeling of security and more guns decrease the crime rate. It is clear that our Second Amendment guarantees our right to bear arms. Author of “Guns as Smut Darrell Miller” states that the United States Supreme Court has held that our Second Amendment guarantees every individual the right to keep and bear arms (1278). Miller also reports that our Second Amendment guarantees an individual the right to keep and bear arms for personal protection (1280). Author Edwin Vieira Jr. states that it is undoubtedly true that all citizens are capable of bearing arms (23). Vieira also claims that throughout the 19th century and most of the 20th century, America suffered from no pervasive gun control of the modern type (23). Since our second amendment... middle of paper ... decrease the murder rate"). The city only began allowing citizens to own handguns for self-defense again in late 2008 (“Guns Decrease Murder Rates”). Many people opposed to guns believe that more guns means more crime, but at the same time, the evidence clearly proves that if handguns were legal in all fifty states, violent crime would decrease dramatically. An intruder would not approach someone who possesses a weapon knowing that the consequences of injury would increase. With our country's second amendment, living in urban areas with high crime rates, people end up in bad situations, guns provide a sense of security and guns decrease crime rates, it It is obvious that I have legitimate reasons why handguns should be legalized. Although Americans have the right to defend themselves, the use of firearms should also come with responsibility..
