Essay / Dreams in the ancient world - 2891
According to dreams in the ancient world, the light of people is believed to be knowledge. It is believed that there are three worlds for a person to be here in the world; the other is in the other world and the third is in an intermediate state which is the state of sleep. The intermediate state helps the person see both states. “By being born, a person assuming his body, becomes united to all evils: when he leaves and dies, he leaves all evil behind him” (p. 125). The middle state has no roads; no joy is happiness apart from itself. The dream magic of the ancient Egyptians placed great importance on dreams. They believe that divine powers make themselves known through dreams and that there is another world because of the dreams they see during their sleep. People who see meaningful dreams and have the power to interpret them were given higher power in Egypt, sometimes gifts and the power to rise to higher honor. The ancient Egyptians believed that the future was cursed through dreams, so magicians used various devices such as magic images and magic words. To obtain visions of the God, they make pictures of the God, wrap their hand in the strip of black cloth that has been dedicated to the God, and lie down to sleep without saying a word, even while answering a question. In ancient times, people were healed by dreams. In the village of Nydsens, in the town of Acharaca, there was a cave, naturally beautiful. Whenever they have sick people, the village priests sleep in the cave on behalf of the sick through dreams and prescribe the remedy. People should be religious and pray to the gods. Some sick people go there themselves and stay in the cave for days ... middle of paper ... is when the dreamer saw two people throwing tomatoes at each other. (P293). Both dreams have similar content. Additionally, studies have been done to see the relationship between body movement and dreams. Studies have shown that most eye moments involve body movements. “the possibility that body movements interpreting periods of eye movements, but followed by additional eye activity, may mark the end of one dream sequence and the beginning of another” (p294). This tells us that body movements play a big role in dreams; they are used to mark the end of the dream. On the other hand, laboratory experiments have shown that men have shown erections during REM and they appear to last for more than half an hour. This erection will still occur even if the dreamer had sex before falling asleep or not. Erection has been shown to diminish as people age.
