Everyone faces guilt at least once in their life, and many authors use guilt to create suspense in their story. The guilt in Macbeth not only affects his state of mind, but it also physically destroys him and a few other characters such as Lady Macbeth. The characters are so affected by guilt that it essentially leads to their deaths, simply because they were not able to deal with the consequences of the events that happened. Although they were destroyed by guilt, they were still forced to move on with their lives and they had to try to hide it, even though Macbeth didn't cope very well. His hallucinations left him and eventually everyone knew he murdered Duncan so he could become the next king.
