In the United States, many surrogates know or have prior knowledge about surrogacy or have even gone through the process before beginning the process and are usually aware that they are capable of providing happiness to biological parents by giving birth to their child. In the article “The curious lives of surrogate mothers. (Cover Story)” written by Lorraine Ali and Raina Kelley states that there are many expressions used to describe surrogacy; for example, "many conservative Christians denounce the practice as an alteration of the miracle of life, while far-left feminists compare gestational carriers to prostitutes who degrade themselves by renting out their bodies." As degrading and horrific as these descriptions may be, they represent the last hope for many couples who wish to have children. Birth parents must rely on the surrogate mother to deliver the baby safely. This is especially true for many gay or same-sex couples who are unable to produce their own children. Therefore, they are looking for gestational carriers who are ready to help these couples realize their dreams of becoming parents.
