  • Essay / Benefits of the Paleo Diet - 734

The Paleo diet is one of the newest diets to attract the attention of the American public. This diet follows a strict set of guidelines that make your diet that of a caveman or woman. Acceptable foods include meats, fish, seeds, nuts, leafy greens and regional vegetables. Cereals are excluded from this diet because the people of the “Paleo” period were hunter-gatherers and did not grow crops (cereals). It is believed that our bodies never got used to eating all those grains when agriculture became a constant food source. The paleo diet, then, is an effort to return your body to the muscular, fit, fast, and versatile state that was the norm at the time. The paleo diet is important for nutrition and health because it follows a path. The paleo diet is easier to stay committed to. to certain other diets because it is even possible to eat Paleo on campus. However, the issue that some students may find difficult is eliminating alcohol from their diet. If a student can overcome alcohol consumption, they will see benefits such as increased energy, reduced fat, more muscle, and improved agility. Besides the obvious health benefits, the paleo diet has some attributes that some students may find intriguing. The diet does not require you to eat strictly 3 meals a day, which is already not common among students. Many students tend to eat one or two large meals a day, which is considered unhealthy because it slows down your metabolism, but the paleo diet encourages you to eat as much as you want and when you want. Also for those who are intolerant to gluten, organic products or lactose, this diet supports the eating habits they already follow. Many student-athletes across the country could advance to the next level without having to leave campus for meals or other extras (saving money at the same time). I was skeptical before doing research, but came to the conclusion that this would be a good diet for me or any other collage student looking to improve their knowledge.
