  • Essay / Baptist Health Medical Staff: A Look at Its...

BackgroundBaptist Health is a nonprofit health system located in Northeast Florida that includes five Magnet-accredited hospitals, health agencies at home, behavioral health practices, pharmacies, and many primary care and specialty physician offices. As one of the region's largest health care providers, physicians have the opportunity to practice in state-of-the-art facilities and affiliate with a community hospital. As of February 2014, Baptist Health had more than 1,400 physicians practicing in more than 70 specialties and nearly 300 allied health professionals. According to an annual National Research Corporation study of Jacksonville area residents, “Baptist Health ranks #1 in the categories of Best Doctors, Best Nurses, Best Quality and Best Reputation” (Baptist Health, 2014). To support medical staff and allied health professionals, most facilities have a medical staff services department or medical staff office (MSO). Although staffed by diverse professionals, this department is managed under the direction of a Director of Medical Staff Services with support from Accreditation Specialists, Medical Staff Coordinators, Institutional Review Board Coordinator , the continuing medical education coordinator, etc. (See Appendix A for more information on Baptist Health MSO Organizational Chart). These individuals provide administrative support to Baptist Health's medical staff and are a means of communication for medical staff-related matters. The responsibilities of a medical staff office include, but are not limited to, accreditation, reappointments, peer review, continuing medical education, committee facilitation, and maintenance of governing documents in middle of paper......the process begins. While this information provides an overview of the accreditation process, some topics have not been mentioned due to confidentiality concerns (see Appendix B for more information on the Bureau's accreditation workflow diagram medical staff).ReferencesBaptist Health.
