  • Essay / Birth order influences personality - 868

Many factors can shape a person's personality, it could be their environment, their peers, their family, their siblings, but you wouldn't think his birth order could either. The last factor will be the topic I will cover in more depth in this essay. Whether you are born first or last, it will have a huge impact on your personality (Parents magazine 2006). The first to introduce the theory of the impact of birth order on personality was the psychologist Alfred Adler at the beginning of the 20th century. This sparked new interest among many in this research (Lesley Ogden 2013). His theory suggests the personality traits common to every first, second and last born. Let me start with the first born in the family and work my way up. The firstborn is the child that the family “practices” on, one might say. New parents have no experience in parenting and want to do their best to raise a good child, which leads them to be more strict. This causes them to put more pressure on the firstborns to do better in everything they do. Which can make them perfectionists and high performers. But they want to be noticed and praised by their parents when they do well. However, it also prepares them to become leaders, especially if they have siblings for whom their parents want them to set an example (Brooks 1984). Independence, dependability, and respect for authority are other traits this group may possess. They are very intelligent and achieve high degrees in school. They can also be serious and very mature for their age. Due to this nature, this group tends to get along very well with their elders. The pressure to take on responsibilities (and sometimes even be forced to) at an early age can lead to negative factors. For the reason it's middle of paper, motivation has nothing to do with birth order, and others say the opposite. Few studies show how birth order does not affect individuals' motivation to achieve (Toni Falbo 1981, Healey and Ellis 2007, Reese, Averett, and Argys 2008, Srivastava 2011). What careers do each of these groups most commonly pursue? Firstborns, as they are considered the most intellectual, they tend to move towards high professional careers. For the middle children and babies of the family, with their risk-taking and laid-back personalities, they gravitate toward artistic careers (Brooks 1984 and USA Today 2002). This once again comes back to the influence that parents have on their children, they put a heavy burden on the first borns to get a very good career, but by the time the later borns choose their career path, they have relaxed and allow them to take more risks. (United States Today 2002).
