THESIS STATEMENTThroughout the epic Odyssey, the theme of like father like son is demonstrated through Telemachus following in the footsteps of his father (Ulysses). PURPOSE STATEMENTIt is evident that through extensive research into the Odyssey, Telemachus evolves into a character similar to his father Odysseus in this epic.INTRODUCTIONImagine ten grueling years of constant bloodshed in war. After all that horror of traveling on vicious waters: fighting a sea monster, traveling to the underworld, and angry gods trying to wreak havoc wherever you go. All this with the aim of finding your loved ones. A brave Greek warrior – Odysseus – encounters all these circumstances. His son longs for his return home. His son is in a nervous state. He has no father figure in his life and is unable to protect his mother in her precarious situation. The Odyssey tells the exciting story of the intelligent Greek hero Odysseus. He experiences many terrifying adventures during his long-awaited return to his kingdom, Ithaca. In this epic, Odysseus' son, Telemachus, becomes the man his father is and demonstrates the personality traits that Odysseus possesses. Telemachus must overcome his fear to undertake journeys to reunite his family. Odysseus and Telemachus share a love and appreciation for Penelope. They both start out as impulsive men and must later learn patience in panicked situations. “He is like his father Odysseus, in that he is loyal and disgusted by evil. He too, like his father, is ready to fight for his freedom. (Pope 45)Telemachus is described in relation to Odysseus – they are equally devoted in their lives to Penelope and have a great willingness to overcome obstacles in their lives to reunite....... middle of paper... . ..he wasn't sure if he would take his father's place. Odysseus learns to act wisely and not impulsively throughout his adventures. “All his past training in patience, distrust, and self-control is now necessary to help him play his role…” (Walker 76). From the past obstacles Odysseus had to overcome on his journey back to Ithaca, he moved from behaving impulsively to thinking about strategies for attacks and battles. CONCLUSION In Homer's Odyssey, the theme of “father like son” is demonstrated. Telemachus becomes the man his father (Odysseus) is by acquiring the personality traits he possesses and evolving into a courageous and courageous character, like his father was. Odysseus and Telemachus both go on a journey to reunite their families; they both have great love and appreciation for Penelope and move from impatience and impulsiveness to patience..
