The past and present of me and my familyWhile South Yemen was still under British occupation in 1900, most of my family members lived in North Yemen, in the region of Ibb, a small village called Hackerr. According to the article “Ancient Yemen,” from the beginning of the 20th century to the end of the 1960s, “North Yemen was ruled by two powerful imams. Imam Yahya Ibn Muhammad and his son Ahmad created a king-state. “The north was under absolute power until the 1948 revolution, during which Imam Yahya was killed. He also said that "the history of South Yemen after the British occupation of Aden in 1839 was very different." A decade after the Northern Revolution, Britain withdrew from the region in 1967. The port of Aden was the target of British occupation due to its geographic importance for trade. My great-grandparents, Ali and Catiba, settled in the North, in East Ibb, in the village of Hackerr after escaping tribal conflicts. My family could trace its lineage back to Arab origins. As they were agriculturalists and illiterate, it is difficult to document, but the importance of the family name between the tribes endured and carried through subsequent generations. After seven decades, changes and opportunities began to appear on the horizon and most of my family members followed the changes and began to seek a better life for themselves in the behavior of the generations to come. My great-grandparents worked as farmers on their property in the steep lands located in the middle of the mountain called Al-soor. They planted cereals and corn, and they had domestic animals, like cows and oxen. They have been helpful in doing farm work and benefiting from other animals... middle of paper ...... and/or have misinterpreted other cultures and we view our culture as the correct one. In fact, no culture is bad. Every culture has a different way that must follow to function. I respect other cultures and expect my culture to be respected. I believe that having certain knowledge is what helps reduce the cloud that covers realities. We read to know and we learn from what we have read. For example, in "Between Worlds" by Bachmann and Barth, part of what I learned is that we judge others by their appearance or lifestyle and we pretend that our predictions are positive when in reality they are negative.
