Essay / Developmental Psychology in the Movie Mask - 781
I'm a big fan of the movie Mask, a psychological movie starring Cher, Eric Stoltz, and Laura Dern. Even though I had watched the movie before, I decided to watch it again recently for old times sake. Additionally, I wanted to know more about the movie and so I started searching for information on the Internet. I came across a site that gave an in-depth analysis of the film. Although it is a fairly old film, the story will make you cry. It is so inspiring and empowering for anyone facing difficulties in life. It makes our problems seem so small compared to the character in the film. This film was released in (1985), the film was both a commercial and critical success and went on to earn several Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations. The film is based on the story of Roy L Dennis, nicknamed "Rocky" and who suffered from a skull deformity at a young age. The boy had a skull malformation caused by an extremely rare disease called craniodiaphyseal dysplasia. This causes cranial hypertrophy; and is commonly called Lionite. The movie The Mask is an eye-opener for many people who may have never heard of the disease or who may have heard of it but may not have been in contact with someone who suffers from it . The events of the film give these individuals the opportunity to witness the disease and how it affects a person's social life and how individuals who suffer from it cope with life. It also shows how people should treat others suffering from this disorder. Rocky, the main character, lives with his mother and her boyfriend. Despite his rare condition, he is accepted fully and unconditionally loved by his family, including his grandparents and his parents' friend who likes to ride motorcycles...... middle of paper ..... It's an opportunity to explain a lot of things that she doesn't see. The young couple, now in love, ends up going to see Diana's parents together. Rocky's old wounds are reopened as the parents are not happy with their future son-in-law. This forces Diana's parents to take Diana to a remote blind school so she can be separated from Rocky. Rocky's telephone messages to Diana are not forwarded to her and some are even deleted. This makes their relationship deteriorate. This is very common even in today's world. Parents are overprotective and want to dictate to their children who they should marry. This depresses Rocky and as a result he suffers a severe headache which eventually kills him. The film ends with Rocky being put to rest. Works Cited Bogdanovich, P. (director). (1985). Mask [Motion image]. Universal images.
