Essay / The Fall of Okonkwo - 744
The Fall of OkonkwoThe apple never falls far from the tree. In the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Okonkwo, who is the main character despised being like his father. His father had died when Okonkwo was very young. But in the end, he was just like his father when he hanged himself. Okonkwo is a vicious man which manifests itself when he kills the messenger at the Igbo meeting. He absolutely hates his son Nwoye for joining the European Church. Okonkwo ultimately fails on his return to Umuofia and no one supports him in his rebellion against the Europeans. Okonkwo failed when he failed to convince anyone to rebel alongside him. Europeans had begun to take over.1. “One market day in Eke, a small band of fugitives arrived in our town. Most of them were sons of our country whose mothers had been buried with us. But there were also some who came because they had friends in our town, and others who saw no other place to escape. And so they fled to Umuofia with a pitiful story” (138). The village of Abame had been wiped out. The Europeans used the Eke market day as a cover to penetrate the down and destroy it from within. The Europeans were behind the attack, but the people of Umuofia gave them land to build a church in the Evil Forest.2. “The missionaries had come to Umuofia. They had built their church there, had won a handful of converts, and were already sending evangelists to the surrounding towns and villages” (142). The Europeans made the lives of the Igbo people around them collapse by pitting each other against each other. Europeans welcomed many people into their church, including outcasts. The Igbo would have no chance of rebelling against European colonization if they did not unite. They need someone to stand... middle of paper... died a dishonorable death like his father.2. “Okonkwo's second wife had simply cut some leaves to wrap food, and she said so. Without further argument, Okonkwo hit her violently and left her and her only daughter crying” (38). Okonkwo beat his wife and was very cruel to the rest of his family. Unoka had beaten his family a lot, just like Okonkwo. Okonkwo had killed one of his sons, Ikemefuna, and beaten his other son for joining the Christian church. They both did stupid things to their families for stupid reasons. Conclusion: When Okonkwo returned, no one rebelled with him and so he failed to drive the Europeans out of Umuofia. Okonkwo did what he tried not to be, which was like his father. As one religion rises, the other must fall in order to maintain balance, your people must be united as a powerful force or everything will collapse..
