Essay / The NRA's Fight to Protect the Second Amendment
Canadian and International Law ISPPart A: EssayThe NRA (National Rifle Association) is a non-partisan, non-profit organization; its purpose is to protect the Second Amendment of the United States Bill of Rights ("A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be violated.") promote gun rights as well as marksmanship, gun safety, and opposition to legislative proposals for gun control (About the NRA, National Rifle Association). Other objectives include "promoting and encouraging rifle shooting on a scientific basis" by preparing youth programs on shooting training, hunting, firearms competitions, as well as by conducting law enforcement training for new recruits (About the NRA, National Rifle Association). The NRA is effective in promoting and protecting the Second Amendment, opposing restrictions on gun ownership, fighting for the right of law-abiding citizens to own firearms for self-defense, promoting gun safety, and preserving and emphasizing the heritage of American gun culture since the Second Amendment. Currently, the NRA is the leading organization opposing restrictions on gun sales. Their main claim is to justify that gun control is unnecessary because guns are the only effective protection for the weakest members of society against those who would prey on them (Gottfried 53). For example, older people do not have the strength to defend themselves against attackers because they are weak. One of the NRA's contributions to society is its support of training women in the use of handguns within the Orlando Police Department. As a result, rape statistics dropped 90% from the previous year (Gottfried 54).
