“The widow Douglas, she took me for her son and allowed her to sivilize me” (Twain 1). The role of a parent is important in a person's life because they learn the acceptable way to live their life and even how to act spiritually. As people grow up, they remember the character traits and directives given by their guardians and use them to establish their own beliefs and shape their actions. In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain illustrates the influence of morality and religion that the Widow Douglas teaches young Huck and to which he returns throughout the novel. Mark Twain begins by describing Huck staying in the widow's house and conforming to the social norm. of civilized behavior, he said he was also “getting used to the widow's ways, and they did not warn me so harshly” (Twain 19). Huckleberry begins to enjoy the widow's lifestyle. He begins to love his education and the love he receives from the woman. He learns to be a more respectable human being by seeing the goodness in the widow's ways, but as the good characteristics begin to emerge, they are hindered by the evil aspects of his initial bad upbringing. Huck says: “Very soon I wanted to smoke and I asked the widow to let me. ). The widow passively attempts to control Huck and force him to conform to the society he is trying to avoid by running away. The idea of smoking represents all the things Huck did in his old life, but the things he likes are not accepted by the world, and society works to remove the controversial topic or change it to accommodate ... ... middle of paper ...... shows that the boy wishes to be accepted into the widow's religion and will do things to help her reach the next life. Huckleberry also remembers that good people help even criminals and that he should try to help all kinds of people in need. The Widow's Christian teachings have a lasting effect on Huckleberry Finn as he tries to live his life according to the rules given to him and experiences the impact of prayer. The importance of the widow in Mark Twain's novel is shown as Huck Finn experiences the rules and spiritual guidelines that the widow taught him and they impact his actions in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. People often use morals that they remember from the role models they had growing up. But no matter how well people remember the teachings of their role models, they are ultimately free to make their own decisions in their lives...
