ddd CORRECT QUOTES!!! CORRECT QUOTES!!!!! On November 18, 1971, Judah Folkman, a little-known New England surgeon, published a scientific article documenting the dependence of tumors on growth. new blood vessels in the body, as well as the therapeutic implications resulting from his new discovery. Dr. Folkman suggested that the tumor recruited these blood vessels for support. The process by which tumors remove these blood vessels from the body is called angiogenesis. The publication of Dr. Judah Folkman's article "Tumor Angiogenesis: Therapeutic Implications" (New England Journal of Medicine, 1971) influenced cancer research by establishing a new field of study with treatment possibilities that resolve many many age-old therapeutic dilemmas. Angiogenic therapy offers a universal therapeutic approach for all cancers, better mechanisms to detect cancer at an early stage and also addresses previously unexplained phenomena, such as tumor dormancy. Judah Folkman was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1933. In 1953, he graduated from Ohio State. University and continued his studies at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Folkman later became a surgeon and made important discoveries in various medical fields before turning his attention to cancer. For example, he pioneered the field of controlled drug release, which led to the invention of the popular contraceptive “Norplant”. During the 1960s, Dr. Folkman was drafted into the Navy and began investigating the possibility of using a blood substitute that could be stored for long periods of time and then administered to injured people. Once his mission was completed, Dr. Folkman began experimenting in his spare time, studying cancer and the biology of solid tumors. ...... middle of paper ...... because of the development of a tumor?
