An inappropriate job for a woman The novel An inappropriate job for a woman by PD James tells the story of Cordelia Gray, a detective who is sent on a case for find discover the reason why the son of a renowned scientist committed suicide. Throughout the story we see twists and turns and we discover a shocking secret behind the murder of Mark Callender. The topics that will be covered are the crime that took place and how Cordelia solved the murder. Why Cordelia covered up a second murder and what the implications of her actions are; finally, how his society, profession and solution relate to the title given to the book. Cordelia was a real change in how readers would perceive detectives because it showed that there is much more than just what Cordelia feels for Mrs. Leaming because she lost her son and wants to help him because Mark was an innocent bystander who was taken away. by a corrupt man. Cordelia says, “Is this what Mark would want? to which Ms Leaming replied “No. Mark never believed in punishment” (202). Cordelia is shown to have emotions towards the case even though she shouldn't, and as she can sense the sadness Mrs Leaming shows for her son, she wants to make sure justice is served to the right person . If Mrs. Leaming was going to march for justice, Cordelia was going to make it happen one way or another. If the reader looks at the legal aspect of her solution, Cordelia can go to prison for contributing to the murder of Ronald Callender. She also helps stage the murder to make it appear as if he committed suicide. Now she's adding to her list of crimes because she's falsifying a crime. Cordelia helping Mrs. Leaming only compounds their lack of morality. This is because Cordelia allowed the murder to happen, and she is covering it up because in her eyes the justice system may not have been in Mrs. Leaming's favor. She may have been convicted, but neither Cordelia nor Mrs. Leaming had any knowledge of the future to know how she might have been convicted. Cordelia should have let the justice system take its course and hoped the jury understood why Ms Leaming made the decision she did rather than taking matters into her own hands. When looking at the emotional aspect of this novel, it's easy to think that one could just forget what happened, but this can be very taxing for both parties. Knowing that someone was murdered and you did nothing but sit back and watch the whole event unfold right before
