Essay / Small Island and Concise English-Chinese Dictionary...
IntroductionThe movement of people from a certain socio-economic condition is known as migration. Migrant refers to a person who moves or migrates and is used to express the difference between them and natural-born citizens. In a cosmopolitan nation, the citizen evolves like a foreigner who begins with “the other” to define his own intercultural identity. Thanks to immigration, the migrant, from the perspective of the host country, is considered the “Other” by the citizens of that nation. The host country does this in an attempt to defend its statehood. On the other hand, citizens victimize migrants in reaction to their difference. For the migrant, who at this stage gradually transforms into an “Other” that is much easier to communicate, considers hard work to obtain citizenship as a way out (Trottier and Arsenault, 2011, 56). In this essay I have chosen to compare and contrast the two cases of literature first by Levy, “Small Island”; and “A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers” by Xiaolu Guo. It is important to note that Levy is an English writer whose origins can be traced back to the islands of Jamaica. Her parents sailed to England, where she was born (Levy, 2010, 15). On the other hand, Xiaolu was born in China. She has become a respected author with her novels written in many languages. Small Island highlights two families, the first being Jamaican and the second English. The collision between these two families with divergent socio-economic origins comes to the fore. A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers highlights how East Meets West (Guo, 2008, 25).A Chinese-English Dictionary for LoversThe author begins his book by apologizing for his E.. .... middle of paper ....... Therefore, society balances the change of new immigrants with that of existing citizens. British society is open to exploring the vast culture that once constituted its empire and novels such as A Small Island and An English-Chinese Dictionary of Conscience help to meet this vision. In both stories, we see the culture shock that migrants experience when trying to settle in a new country. One is also able to learn a different culture and thus be better prepared in case an opportunity to leave a socio-cultural society presents itself. Works Cited Guo, X. (2008).
