  • Essay / Flying to the Unknown: Character Building Moment

    There are character building moments, I think, in everyone's life. Moments that demand every part of the person, that demand a full allocation of their vital energies to that precise moment in which they present themselves. Coincidentally, I recently experienced one of those moments, one of which I am proud to announce. However, I feel it necessary to provide a history of my struggle before discussing its fruits. I started working at a very young age, filling the role my father had chosen to leave behind. My first jobs were terrible, working construction with family friends on the weekends and only making $40 a day for my low level of production. Those jobs were exhausting and I don't miss them, but there is something beautiful about sitting down after a long day of work, with your clothes worn out, with your hands throbbing from exhaustion, and eating a meal hot. Things regain their perspective. Things seem simple. Poverty doesn't seem so bad. The recession hit and the economy deteriorated, hence my part-time weekend job in construction. The work has become...
