  • Essay / Unlocking the Potential of Stem Cells - 1088

In an era of astounding advances in science and medicine, perhaps one of the most promising advances is the discovery and use of stem cells strains. While the two types of stem cells; adults and embryos, each holds enormous potential for the progress of medicine, their origins are often surrounded by controversy. Specifically, embryonic stem cells have become the center of a global debate in recent years, as the creation and research of these cells causes dissension when they do not conform to certain religious and moral beliefs. Funding for stem cell research is limited, so it has become increasingly difficult to achieve success with these cells. Embryonic stem cell research, a potentially life-saving scientific innovation, must be continued and supported by the public. Embryonic stem cell research provides an effective way to use surplus embryos that would otherwise not be used in fertility treatments. Perhaps the biggest objection to this form of stem cell research is that an embryo must be destroyed in order to extract a line of stem cells. However, the embryonic stem cell lines used are obtained “from an embryo generated for reproductive purposes that is no longer needed.” for this purpose”, and would have been destroyed and abandoned in any case (Kirchstein). Obviously, if these embryos are not used for their originally intended purpose, they should be used in another way instead of being disposed of. Using spare embryonic cells to continue valuable scientific research is a better alternative than disposing of this rich source of research material. In fact, most of the embryos used for this research are past the date when they can even be used for fertilization.... middle of paper ...... there are currently no treatment options. Clearly, embryonic stem cells represent a tremendous advancement in medicine and have the potential to save lives. As the need for new cures for life-threatening diseases grows, scientists are increasingly turning to stem cell research to provide the answers they need. . Despite the intense controversy surrounding this research, the results of countless experiments have proven themselves. It therefore seems unreasonable that stem cell research is not the most viable option when considering the treatment of illnesses and injuries. A pressing need for treatments for previously incurable diseases can be met through ardent research into embryonic stem cells. Continuing and supporting embryonic stem cell research is essential in the field of regenerative medicine and in efforts to save human lives..
