  • Essay / Vitamin C content in fruit juices - 1793

Objective: To study the vitamin C content of fruit juices.IntroductionIn this experiment, I will find out which fruit juice contains the most vitamin C. I will use a similar method to titration but I will use a syringe instead of a burette. Vitamin C Vitamin C also known as ascorbic acid is necessary for the growth and maintenance of healthy tissues, especially skin, blood vessels, bones, gums and teeth. Vitamin C contributes to resistance to infections and wound healing. It also helps the body absorb iron from food. Vitamin C is found in green vegetables, potatoes, tomatoes and citrus fruits like oranges and lemon. A lack of vitamin C can cause scurvy, iron deficiency and poor wound healing. A healthy diet should include plenty of vitamin C because the human body cannot produce its own vitamin C. DCPIPDichlorophenolindolphenol or DCPIP is a blue substance that acts as an indicator. It changes from blue to red with acids but loses its color in the presence of certain chemicals, including vitamin C. DCPIP solution can be used to test for the presence of vitamin C in foods. Hypothesis Orange juice will have the highest vitamin C content. Citrus fruits have a higher vitamin C content. Orange and lemon juice will contain more vitamin C than pineapple juice. Additionally, since lemons are more acidic than oranges, I predict that orange juice will contain more vitamin C than lemon juice. Vitamin C affects, the higher the pH, the higher the pH.VariablesIndependent variables• Different fruit juices (pineapple, orange and lemon).Dependent variables• Amount of vitamin C in fruit juices.Controlled variable• Same amount of liquid for.... .... middle of paper...... there were variables that were controlled, there was another variable that I only identified after our investigations were completed. Vitamin C oxidizes easily, so when the juices were left out, some of the vitamin C in them might have oxidized. Overall, I think I performed the experiment accurately and took my time trying to make all of my measurements as accurate as possible. so that my data is reliable. Next time, I will do more tests instead of just 3 to have more results and thus be able to obtain a more precise average. I will also experiment with more fruit juices to see if there are other fruits with higher vitamin C content. I will do an experiment to see if there is a difference in vitamin C levels between fresh juices and store-bought juices. I may also test different brands of juice to see if they contain different levels of vitamin C..
