The lake located in the Quilotoa crater is located in the circuit known as Quilotoa and is only 14 kilometers below the village of Zumbahua. Quilotoa is a small village which seems to be particularly touristy and attracts a spectacular crater lake. The crater lake is simply magnificent. The deep blue waters can be seen when looking over the crater rim and looking down the sheer walls that drop 400 meters down to the lake. The Quilotoa Lagoon, located in the crater of the volcano, has an interesting geological history. Ten thousand years ago, the volcano erupted violently, sending a huge pyroclastic flow down the slopes of the volcano. The effects of water and wind on the rubble from the eruption created the white walls that can be seen in the river canyons and mountains near the volcano. The Quilotoa eruption (800 BC) was an explosive event of greater magnitude than previously believed in pre-Columbian Ecuador. During this event, the ashes traveled hundreds of kilometers north of Quito. These layers of ash have provided interesting clues to Ecuadorian archaeologists and geologists about life in the past.
