    This is the fifth step. This stage takes place between the ages of 12 and 18. At this stage, the adolescent will try to understand who he is and who he will become. They could try different things and different trends. Erikson believed this had to happen in order to have a sense of identity and know where they wanted to be in the world and in the future. They will try to fit in with the rest of the world and if they feel they can't do it, they will. become confused and insecure. Erikson also believed that adolescents who do not receive the appropriate support and/or encouragement will lower their self-esteem, lower their self-confidence, be unsure of who they are, and unsure of where they are going in life. However, adolescents who receive the appropriate support and encouragement will have a sense of independence and self-control. The next step is intimacy versus isolation.
