Essay / The Analysis of the Character of the Necklace - 703
Guy De Maupassant emphasizes that “Mathilde works so much that she loses her beauty” (Explanation of). The ten years of hard work made her question her selfish ways of behaving. If Mathilde had acted altruistically at the beginning, she would not have found herself in the situation that her greed caused. The change from such a greedy girl to a selfless woman proved what a dynamic character Mathilde was in “The Necklace”. Mathilde chose not to have a social life after the necklace incident because she worked hard to pay for the new necklace. Maupassant proved that Mathilde had changed by showing: “He and Mathilde spend a lot of energy repaying their debt; Monsieur Loisel is even obliged to carry out additional work in his free time” (Overview). After ten years, Mathilde realizes that being rich isn't everything; she has changed for the better. Guy De Maupassant showed all types of literary terms in a brilliant and creative way; the characterization is a huge element that stands out. Readers were able to follow the system modified by Mathilde throughout the story. She was introduced as the protagonist and was seen as a greedy woman. As she was never happy, she experienced a conflict that changed her life. Eventually, she became selfless and proved how dynamic she was.
