Essay / Analysis of Watership Down by Richard Adams - 800
The title of this book is Watership Down and it was written by Richard Adams. The story is about a group of rabbits who run away from their burrow or pack after learning that their lives are in danger. These rabbits listen to the warnings of a lesser rabbit with great powers, this rabbit can predict the future. After hearing the warning from the aforementioned rabbit, Fiver, the group flees their warren, with Fiver's brother, Hazel, as leader on a perilous journey. During this journey, a major theme of the book was deception. The rabbits constantly told stories about El-ahrairah, or the “Prince of a Thousand Enemies.” The “Prince of a Thousand Enemies” was a popular rabbit hero, who constantly tricked animals and other things. The Rabbits used this as inspiration to constantly use deception. Fiver is Hazel's younger brother. He's a shy little bunny with big, staring eyes and a nose that constantly wiggles. Fiver has the ability to sense things that other rabbits cannot, he can predict the future. Because of this, he is often in a nervous state, but he always manages to guide the group in the right direction no matter how he feels. Fiver also has the ability to detect danger when others cannot. At one point, the pack felt like they were safe with a new warren in an exposed location, but Fiver ended up saving them from certain death. Fiver constantly sticks to his instincts and does not change his mind because of the opinions of others. He is definitely an important asset for the warren. Overall, I didn't like Watership Down, as I constantly felt weighed down while reading it. When I started the book, I expected a light and adventurous story, but at some point many of us began to regret leaving the warren. Although the story may seem insignificant, this is when I really started to doubt myself and my leadership skills. That’s when I realized I wasn’t fit to lead the pack. That's when everyone started relying on each other. As we progressed on this journey, I learned that even though I was the leader, I couldn't always save everyone at all times. I became someone who didn't think everything new, I became someone who learned something new every day. During this journey, I have constantly struggled with myself, but as we move forward in this new journey, I am constantly learning to face myself and my problems, and how to help others. I haven't read this book in its entirety, but I have read about 25% of the book. This report was written based on information from the part I read.
