Essay / most affected countries. There is evidence of settlements in Iran dating back almost 5,000 years. Land of green valleys and arid deserts in the Middle East of Asia. Tehran is the capital and largest city in the country. Known first as the Persian Empire, not only Iran, but also a vast territory in southwest Asia and parts of Europe and Africa. Foreign powers have occupied Iran on and off since the early years. The most significant invasion was in the mid-600s, when Muslim Arabs took control of the country, which had a lasting effect on its culture. Muslim caliphs (religious leaders) have been the first to rule the country for around 200 years. During Muslim Arab rule, the Islamic faith spread throughout Iran and today most Iranians are Muslims. In Iran, in the early 1900s, the discovery of oil gave the country a huge source of wealth. The king who ruled Iran from 1925 to 1941, Reza Shah Pahlavi, and his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who ruled until 1979, used all oil export revenues to promote economic and social development. Revolutionaries, led by religious leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, took control of Iran after 1979, ending the regime of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Revolutionaries change the government from a constitutional monarchy to an Islamic republic. The new policies led the Islamics to take control of all areas just to end the nation's economic problems and tense relations between Iran and Western countries. The government after the 1979 Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini and his supporters, drafted a Constitution for the new Islamic Republic based on the teaching of Islam, which came into force in December 1979. Iranian factories also produce chemicals, leather goods, machine tools, refined copper, steel and tobacco products. Mining accounts for about 9 percent of Iran's gross domestic product and employs about 1 percent of the country's workers. Oil is by far Iran's most important mineral product. The country's oil fields contain approximately 48 billion barrels of oil. Commercial oil accounts for more than 90 percent of the total value of Iranian exports. The country also exports caviar, cotton, dried fruits, minerals, nuts and spices. Its main imports include electrical appliances, food products, industrial machinery, medicines and military equipment. Trading partners include Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
