“The women's movement spoke of moral purity, while feminists emphasized rights and personal development” (Norton et al. 555). Even though feminists took a more demanding and formidable approach to achieving their goals, they nevertheless retained the softer side of their sexuality. “Charlotte Perkins Gilman, author of Women and Economics (1898) is a major figure and one of the most influential feminists of this social evolution. She argued that domestic roles had become obsolete” (Norton et al. 555). However, without the cult of domesticity, men would not have been able to achieve the wealth they have. “Gilman said that women's work in the home certainly allows men to produce more wealth than they otherwise could; and in this way, women are economic factors in society” (Gilman 13). However, the authoritarian attitude of men prevents women from achieving economic independence. As a result, Gilman emphasized that women, considered the property of men and forced to perform domestic tasks without being paid, must be economically independent. Women and economics gained popularity with the new term "feminism", with Gilman further calling for women to gain economic independence within a male-dominated world.
